Sodium, chlorides, magnesium and potassium are essential for energy production, nervous and muscle function and muscle recovery.

Electrolytes (potassium, chloride and sodium) and adequate hydration ensure optimal metabolism in the cells; they contribute to the horse's performance. During hard exercise, transport, fever, diarrhoea, stress, sweating and high temperatures, the horse loses a lot of electrolytes. The metabolism of muscle cells slows down and so muscle function slows down. The lack of electrolytes is reflected in nervous disorders and muscle problems, including muscle cramps, muscle pain and fatigue. After heavy exertion and sweating, it is important to restore the electrolyte balance in the body; the lost electrolytes must be replaced! Dextrose, in combination with electrolytes, enhances water absorption and thus also speeds up recovery.

Important essential amino acids are lysine and methionine, which cannot be produced by the body and must be obtained from the diet. Lysine is important for muscle development and also affects the arteries, heart and blood vessels. Methionine is important for tendons and connective tissues and enhances fat metabolism and the removal of waste products. Lysine and methionine form carnitine in the body, which in turn boosts performance, aids recovery, enhances fat metabolism and has a powerful cardiovascular strengthening effect.

Vitamin E (an antioxidant) is very important for muscle function, especially in stressful situations, protecting against damage, and is also very important for the transport of fatty acids.

Vitamin C (antioxidant) influences the absorption of other vitamins and is a general fitness vitamin.

B vitamins are needed for energy production in muscles and for repairing muscle tissue damage caused by stress:

Vitamin B1 is needed for the utilisation of energy from carbohydrates.
Vitamin B2 plays an important role in muscle energy production and protein and fat metabolism.
Vitamin B6 plays an important role in the body's fluid balance and nervous system, and also contributes to protein and fat metabolism and the absorption of nutrients.
Vitamin B12 is essential for energy metabolism and for the production and regeneration of red blood cells.
Niacin affects fatty acid metabolism and also dilates blood vessels and is therefore important for circulatory and nervous system function and is essential for carbohydrate and protein metabolism.
Pantothenic acid contributes to the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fatty acids in the body, promotes energy metabolism, maintains and repairs cells, folic acid also plays a role in the production and digestion of essential fatty acids.
Folic acid is essential for the growth and regeneration of tissues and the formation of red blood cells. Folic acid is also required for energy production and protein metabolism.
