A research project investigating how changes in the composition of gut microorganisms affect bone changes, with a focus on changes in the knee. Participants received green-lipped mussel and glucosamine for 12 weeks, during which the composition of their gut microbiota was measured before and after the intervention, followed by an assessment of changes in the joints. The study is being controlled against a group that did not receive green-lipped mussel.
Results: Participants who received green-lipped mussel showed a reduction in undesirable bacteria, while the presence of health-promoting microorganisms increased. The more beneficial microorganisms the participants had, the greater the improvement in joint function and the fewer side effects were observed.
