Inadequate earthing is the most common cause of poor fence performance
Inadequate earthing is the most common cause of poor fence performance (and interference with radio equipment). Common causes of inadequate earthing include dry soil, earthing rods left too exposed, an insufficient number of earthing rods or the wrong material for the earthing rod (e.g. bristle steel, which is a poor conductor of electricity when corroded).

By improving the earthing to comply with the instructions and to work properly, you can often correct many of the problems associated with poor fence performance.

Adequate grounding of the fence requires an adequate amount of ground rod. Depending on the length of the fence and the power of the shepherd, you will usually need between 1 and 6 grounding rods. In dry conditions and on long fences, you may need more than the recommended number of grounding rods. There can never be too many ground rods; rather than too few, put in extra. You can find the recommended number of earthing rods for each shepherd both on the shepherd's sales kit and on the shepherd's website.

Note! If you install a separate shepherd's lightning arrester in your fence, please note that it will need its own earthing posts (at least 3).
