Magnesium is one of the body’s most important minerals, an activator of many enzymes, as it is essential for nerve and muscle function as well as the heart and blood vessels. Magnesium cannot be stored in the body, so it must be added to the daily feed intake.

The most common symptoms of deficient horses are behavioral changes such as nervousness, anxiety, and tension.

There is also a link between magnesium deficiency and insulin resistance. It has been observed that horses with external signs of insulin resistance, such as fat deposits in the neck, root of the tail, and behind the shoulders, lose external IR signs within a few weeks of initiating magnesium supplementation.

Horses on spring grass often also lack magnesium because spring hay is rich in potassium, which prevents the absorption of magnesium.
